I don't think gloves were the issue... more like "Licking too many Zoa colonies" ;-P

Looks like he is a bit of a shady character. There are threads on reef forums bashing him pretty hard. From what I've read it seems that he was able to obtain some illegal to collect corals with permission from authorities but took more than he was supposed to and possibly ended up selling some of them. I think he was supposed to be researching Caribbean corals diseases. He had a "mysterious" tank crash and claimed the corals were lost and the ones he saved were cross contaminated with Pacific corals so they couldn't be returned.
