What's up with all these purple corals?
Seems to be a influx of purple soft corals showing up on Liveaquaria.com. These color morphs are new to me. What do you think about them? I've never seen any like it so I'm wondering if it's from a location in the ocean that causes the color morph and they will just turn regular color under normal tank conditions, or, hopefully not a dye job.

Hope not. Remember the Glass Fish with the neon coloration and the "strawberry / blueberry " tetras several years ago ? *shudder*

I don't remember the Glass Fish or tetras but when I got back into keeping aquariums, in about 2000, I bought a 45 gallon tank from Wet Pets and the most colorful fish in there where Parrot Cichlids. There was a whole tank crammed full of them, all different colors; blue, green, red, pink, orange,.... I bought one blue one and one red one, not having any idea that they where dyed. I had no idea that this was even possible, just really colorful fish I'd never seen before. I started to figure it out when they both started to grow and turn orange. I thought the tattooed mollies were the worst but after reading how they dip the fish in a chemical to remove the slime coat and then dye them I think that's probably worse. I found this article while looking up dyed corals,

When I started reef keeping, I suspect, I unknowingly bought a dyed pagoda cup from Wet Pets. It was yellow but an exceptionally bright yellow. I have seen yellow pagodas before but this one was super bright. I had it for maybe 2 days before the color started to change and it slowly started dieing off.

I don't think mother nature ever made a leather coral that purple, looks like a dye job to me.

Re: What's up with all these purple corals?
I found a thread about these on reefcentral. Someone on there contacted LA and this is what they had to say about it.
I bought some "Blue Octopus Ink Heteroxenia" from LA about a year ago and was disappointed when I got it. The picture was really blue and when I got it the colors didn't match at all. Not saying it was dyed but the coral I ordered wasn't the color I received. I even emailed them that they sent me the wrong coral and they sent me pretty much the same message that I quoted above.
This was the coral I bought,
And this is what I got,
The picture above that I took was under 150w 14,000k Phoenix bulbs which are REALLY blue so the xenia under less blue lighting is not even close to the coral I ordered. On the bright side, I still have this frag in my 20 gallon mantis tank and it's growing well but not the blue color that I ordered.
Thank you for your inquiry. All of the corals we offer are naturally colored as shown in the Diver's Den. However, they are illuminated under 10,000K, and Actinic T5 fluorescent lighting. The coloration of these corals will vary under different intensities and Kelvin ratings of light bulbs and may look different under 10K, 14, or 20K Metal Halides, VHO, or Power Compact Lights.

Wetpets still sells dyed fish so I'm sure they would have no hesitation in selling a dyed coral. I refuse to shop there and support that kind of stuff.
