Getting a Molly
I figured I would get some action going on in this community forum... only to announce that tomorrow I'm acclimating a molly over to saltwater. Petco has a yellow with black spots female. Eats nuisance algae, brackish... I'm pretty pumped.

Nice. I recently converted two mollies to saltwater. & one was pregnant and in the process she decided to have her babies, 80 to be exact. Only about 10 made it

Just picked up 1. Just for the algae eating. So far, so good. :-)

I'm not sure if it's going to make it at this point. It appears to be laboring against the current and staying around the top of the water now.

Re: Getting a Molly
Is there any risk of disease from freshwater fish to saltwater fish? I've never heard of it but is freshwater ich different from saltwater ich?

Re: Getting a Molly
That's an excellent question... I'm assuming there's very little risk, but that doesn't mean I would be if I had several hundred dollars worth of fish in my tank!

Re: Getting a Molly
It didn't make it. I'm going to try again in a few weeks. I'll get 3 or 4 and put them in a 10g. Then I'll slowly raise the salinity a bit each day over a week or more. If I have more than 1 make it, would anyone else be interested in it?

If memory serves , the mollies born in salt water are more likely to survive and breed in a marine tank. Try slowly acclimating a few pairs and then introduce their offspring to your reef.
And , yes, I'd be interested in some.

Re: Getting a Molly
It is a VERY SLOW acclimation process. I took about a week and a 1/2 acclimate mine. They only lasted about 4 months though. May try again soon.

I would think that brakish born would have a better/longer survival rate.

I think all the "common" live-bearing tooth carps such as mollies , platies , swords and guppies originated in brackish waters. That said , it would probably be easier ( and cheaper) to acclimate the "feeder" types to a marine environment . I had a friend in Jr. High who converted his guppies to salt and maintained a breeding population.
It might be better to try the regular black molly ( or some of the large sailfin varieties) for this purpose.

Re: Getting a Molly
i had read somewhere one time, that mentioned specifically that the plain jane black sailfin mollys were better suited for this purpose than the other varieties. and platies didnt work at all in the read i had.... i wish i had a link to provide!
i can honestly say the only tank i dont have to clean the glass on has black mollies in it, and they are worth their weight in gold vs algae, WAY better than plecos imo!

People that get bit by nasty spiders need to visit the ER and not be posting about mollys on forums. Get your a$$ to the doctor!! Lol. Hope everything is alright.

Re: Getting a Molly
Spiders!! Argh!
I've lived here for 5 years now and been bitten at least twice, fortunately not by the Brown Recluse, but by some type that takes about 2 months to heal, and leaves a lovely bullet hole scar. Asked at work about being bitten, to find half the folks have never been bitten. Either they have no life outdoors, or they like my English flesh.
Now I know what to do, bbq sauce and duct tape ... but what colour duct tape? I'm certain that some colours will accelerate the healing process, but which?
