Refugium Design Empty Refugium Design

Post by matt_longview Tue 25 Jan 2011, 8:51 pm

Picked myself up a 37g tall bowfront tank. Thing looks gorgeous... likely won't be setup until late fall/winter but I want to go ahead and have everything figured out so I can buy stuff for cheap if I see great deals on anything. My plan is to have a 20g tall refugium down below.

I have not decided if I'm going to use a skimmer or not (aka I haven't asked Donnie his opinion on that size of a tank yet... lol). Quick detour for everyone, Donnie and I are using a product called purigen which removes proteins. I'm using the amount suggested for a 100g tank in my 29g. So... the design may or may not have a space for a skimmer.

So what are parts of a fuge that you've seen that you would definitely put in? I like Bill's two return pump... I'll be doing that for sure. I saw a built in reactor section on a build on melevsreef.com that looked interesting. I'll have to do more research on that.

Refugium Design Empty Re: Refugium Design

Some of the resources I used when I was designing my sump:

Personally, for a smaller tank, I like the design in the first picture in the following link: http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html (A few more references at the bottom of the page)
I prefer to have a fuge built into the sump. If you are going to have a fuge you need to split the flow from the overflow pipe or go with a smaller pump in order to slow the flow to a gentle flow. If you split the overflow you can still have your high flow going through the sump to trap detritus and increase oxygenation.
