Snail problem
Ok not sure if this is where this post goes but here goes.
I keep african cichlids and a featherfin catfish in my tank with sand substrate. I started to notice very small empty snail shells in a pile, I just figured it was part of the mixture cause there are some shells in the sand mix. I went to clean out my penguin bio-wheel filter and found an army of snails all over my two filter cartriges. This is the first time I've ever seen this. What should I do?? Evict them all? Keep some?

Re: Snail problem
There are a lot of snails in your filter because it's a safe place for them. You mentioned the pile of empty shells so I'm guessing the cichlids are feeding on them. When you clean your filters , drop the snails back in the tank.
Free fish food.
I used to raise apple snails in my 77 until I added a quartet of young clown loaches. It wasn't long before the only small snails I could find were in my canister filter. As long as you're removing them regularly they won't reach breeding size and your population will eventually disappear.

Re: Snail problem
Looks like the common pond snail. Pretty harmless but prolific. They can carry diseases transferrable to humans though , so be sure and wash your hands.
Don't get paranoid or anything. Those found in the hobby are usually transferred from tank to tank via plants , gravel or ornaments and are "cleaner" than those you'd find in a drainage ditch.

Re: Snail problem
I just opened my canister and found a few larger snails and tons of egg deposits. Escargot anyone lol. I bet they got there from the live plants I put in the tank. Only thing I can think of because I've never had live plants till now, and I've never had a snail problem.

Re: Snail problem
if you have tons of baby pond snails, it sounds like you have an ideal food source for a green spotted puffer. they LOVE pond snails!
