Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Wanting to go to a sump, tank has been set up and running about 3 weeks, the skimmer is just a little too loud for the living room, so I would like to try a sump. I've had a saltwater tank for the last 6yrs but have never had a sump, needless to say, I have no idea what I'm doing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Looking good! I like the bow fronts and corner tanks. I like the different look.
A bunch of questions.....
- I can't tell.... Is your tank reef ready or will you need an overflow?
- Can you remove the center brace between the two doors?
- What is the distance of the door opening? Distance from hinge to hinge?
- Any critters yet? You may want to drain it and set up your sump.
- Could you fit a 40 gallon breeder in the bottom? 36" X 18"X 16" (L-W-H)
- What kind of skimmer do you have?
- How tall is your skimmer and what is the water level requirement?
That's enough questions for now! I prefer to squeeze and 18" wide tank under the display if possible. The wider tank gives you more surface area on the water. Plus, it gives you more room to fit a refugium in the sump.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
I've always had just fish and live rock, only had a few beginner corals. Not had good luck with corals but since I'm starting over with a new tank I'd like to get the right set up and have a reef.
I can't remove the center brace....there would be a gap between the doors if I removed it. All thats in the tank is 100lbs of live rock and 65lbs of live sand. I think I could get a 30 gallon tank under there, depending on how wide it is. The skimmer I have is pretty tall, I got it from ritter678, the AquaC Remora with Mag pump.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Sorry..... You would put the brace back on once you got the tank in. Most people have to remove and replace the brace to get a bigger sump under the tank.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Personally, I would go bigger than a 30 gallon sump for a 92 gallon display tank if possible. I will be putting a 50 gallon or 40 gallon breeder under my 72 gallon bow front.

I'll see if I can find a 40 gal that will fit. What else will I need? Can I use the canister filter? Sorry I have so many questions.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Questions are good. I would read up on filter styles. There are many... some people even run under gravel filters in a reef (few and far between... not recommended at all) but the best idea is to pick a filtering style that is proven and works in another tank similar to yours and recreate it.
I would search and research 90 gallon corner bow fronts, find successful ones and ask their owners questions about their setups, sump sizes, and filtering. Theoretically, if you take the same road they did, you'll end up with the same results.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Does the tank have the black overflow box built into the back of it? If not, you will need an overflow box. I have an extra one that is plenty big enough for your tank.
I prefer not to use a canister filter. They trap detritus and cause problems if not cleaned out frequently. You will also need a return pump. Honestly, all of this will not make sense unless you see it in person. Maybe we can get a video loaded up for you to see all the workings of a sump.

Looks like most of the 92 tanks are using either a 29 or 30 gallon sump. That may be the biggest sump you can get under the tank.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
A video would be great.....the tank does not have an overflow box. There are some pre-made acryllic sumps on ebay, what do you think about those?

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
I don't have any experience with that company but the sump looks nice and not a bad price either. However, depending on the flow, you may want to look into a sump that has more baffles for trapping micro bubbles. I prefer three baffles to make sure the micro bubbles do not make it to the return pump.
The overflow I have is rated up to 150 gallons. I used it on a 75 gallon tank for a long time. You will need one of these to get water down to your sump. I still have the one I put in the Sell/Trade thread.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Where are you located? Could you possibly stop by and take a look at someones sump set-up? Actually seeing one up and running would be the best way to understand how to set-up one. I'm in Longview, you more than welcome to stop by. Seeing one with a HOB overflow box would be a plus too. You'll need to understand that as well.

I did some more measuring under the stand last night. Its gonna be difficult to put a sump in there of any size due the the design of the stand.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
Yea, that's the downside to corner and bow front tanks. I am dealing with that with my 72 bow front build. Just get the biggest one that will fit. That's all you can do.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
I think the largest size sump o can get under there is a 19-20 gallon. BigBlue, I'll buy your overflow box if I can find a sump that fits. Thinking about buying a 19 gal off of eBay like the one on the link I posted earlier.

Re: 92 Gallon Corner Bowfront - sump suggestions
I also have a sump that is 24" Long X 12" Wide X 14" Tall. I am guessing that is either 18 or 19 gallons. It was the sump I had under my wife's 75Gallon tank. If your interested, I will sell it for $15.

OK.... This will at least get you started with little investment. Then you can upgrade to something else later if you choose to.
