Big day today, removed sump to take out the refugium. Used the same fuge on this tank that was on my 40b, and it was causing all kinds of hell in my tank. Now I am running my sump with only water, and normal equipment, will build a new remote fuge this time.

the fuge seems to have died. it was fine and doing great, but since it has warmed up outside and we have had the windows open it got the most rancid smell and all life in it has disappeared. It was almost 1 yr old and had chaeto in it, 4-6" bed and live rock. flow has never change since it was started, all tests in tank seem to be acceptable. The only other issue I have been having is a very small bit of red slime on a piece of rock in the display. All livestock is doing great corals look happy, fish all seem to be comfortable. Also my controller has not alarmed due to PH spikes , so not sure what went wrong. So I have removed the fuge until I can figure it out.

4-6" bed
I would say the sand bed went toxic, I have seen this happen over and over again to deep sand beds but yet people keep using them and wonder what happened to their sytem when it crashes. In my opinion over 3/4" sand bed is a disaster waiting to happen.

I have 3-4 in sand bed in my tank but all live rock in my sump havnt had a problem with it yet I have heard if the sand bed is too deep you have a toxic build up. I have also seen systems crash when the person is using tap and treating it with prime for top offs eventually you get heavy metals build up

I have a 100gpd ro/di system, so no tap in my tank or whoever added it dies.

My DSB was in my fuge only, my display is only about 1" deep

Ok I getting really tired of my CUC not working as fast as I feel they should, so I have made a battle plan of my own. Over the next week I will be gathering the Items needed to do the work my self, I will be scraping rox one by one to remove any unwanted algae. Then it will be on to doing a massive 100% water change (yes 100%) and a total re-scape . Then I will be pulling my sump and adding my refugium back, I never had any algae problems until I removed it so its coming back. From then on out I will be performing my regular 30g WC's like I used too before I got LAZY.

If this doesn't work to kill it off the a nice stick of dynamite will be added next. Hope to have good news soon.

Man I'm gonna tell you how to elliminate that algae! Its called algae burn, I don't know if you know about it or not but if you are going to take the rocks out of the tank, get you a mini propane torch and when you take the rock out you burn the algae with the torch and its a 95% bet it won't come back. If you have corals attached to rocks you can burn up pretty close to the corals, I promise man I'm not crazy, it works, I've seen it done. Don't take but a second to kill it off. I would brush off what you can then burn the holdfasts or roots whichever that are down in the pores of the rock that scrubbing wont remove. Wink .

Great looking stuff Bryan. You will not find anything of any real quality out here. I go to Bossier or Dallas for the nice stuff. Again great looking pieces. Let me know when you get here and maybe we could swap some frags. I may have something you would be interested in. Let me know if your interested and I will send you a list of what I have I can frag.

Hey Grim. I really appreciate the offer, but I think there may be a misunderstanding as to what happened. My tank split on the bottom glass and I had to replace the tan itself, I didnt lose any livestock. Luckily the crack was contained inside the overflow box and I was able to go back to whereI got the tank here in DFW to get my replacement. I didnt come out to the East Texas area, but I will be coming out there in July and would like to possibly get with you then and maybe take a few things off of your hands. Let me know what you would like to get for frags and I will start saving my shopping spree money. Again it is really awsome of you to offer up some things to get me going, but right now I was more concerend about even having a tank to put coral in. I will get you a list of a few things I may want so you can figure out what you want for them.
