By the way, there is a slim chance that you will ever get a blue tang or a powder brown without ich from a fish store. The are ich magnets to begin with.

Do y'all remember those little vases you hung on the wall to keep bettas in ? I remember seeing a young couple in WP&C buying one of those along with a pair of yellow-tailed blue damsels. Sad.

When the local Wal-Mart still sold fish, I witnessed someone buying a 10 gallon set up along with 4 Iridescent Sharks. Glad they don't sell live fish anymore.

Ich (oodinium in marine tanks) is present in every tank. It becomes a problem when fish are stressed by high population density / overfeeding/ bullying/ whatever. Set up a quarantine tank (preferably with a UV ) for all new purchases and keep them in there until you're sure they're healthy.

Take your time in acclimating them to the new tank . Use a dripper for at least an hour to get them used to the new water and you might even want to get one of those "breeding nets" for livebearers to keep them in until you're sure they're going to make it in your main tank.

i have to disagree. ick is a protozoa, a parasite, and it has a defined life cycle. it doesnt just appear. it was introduced some how. i have never once had a case of ick just appear at random in an established tank. it was always following the addition of something new, be it a plant or another fish, or a piece of used equipment... but almost always from petco lol



according to this you can be ick free in 38 days, but the general rule is wait an extra week so you go 45 days and can starve it out of a system without the use of chemicals. if there is no host, it cant survive.

of course temperature plays alot into that too, you can raise the temp and the ick will live grow and die faster.

Taking a good buddy to your favorite fishin hole on the promise of not disclosing the spot only to go the following week and have your prize fishin hole full of your buddies family all drinkin long necks and chunking em in the lake, that,s a lesson learned the hard way!

i got the stink eye from employees at petland today .. i helped a guy that is trying to start a saltwater tank the sold him 3 or 4 pieces of that crappy rock they stick in betta tanks for 80 bucks i pulled him to the side told him how to start a tank the right way they even sold him a freshwater little filter for his 40 gallon tank that he bought there also but he returned the crap he bought and is hopefull goin a different route but in the mean time i feel unwelcome at the only place thats sells saltwater fish in tyler

If they'll learn to create repeat customers instead of going after a single sale maybe they'll be able to afford to teach someone how not to kill a tank full of fish. I walked in there once and saw the exact thing I first posted about. Employee walking around helping someone buy tons of fish while they have the tank in hand. Decided right then that I wouldn't be back.

Fish related, LFS which stock and sell notoriously ill tempered fish to oblivious customers with no disclaimer, no question, and no thought to impact of the purchase on the fish or the person's tank. Time and time again I see stores stocking species of fish that I know from first hand experience or from reading other's experiences should not be kept without some knowledge and research. The result ends up in an "obnoxious" fish who kills everything in the tank. But it could be a perfectly fine fish if kept with some knowledge.

seeing fish like pacu, and pangasius catfish, and tinfoil barbs, and oscars, and koi and knife fish being sold without a "warning, HUGE tank required"

they lookawesome when they are 2 inches long.... then next thing you know you have two 18 inch long pacu u gotta chop with the machette bc they just broke your aquarium....

When nearly every coral in your tank is doing well and there's one or two that you just can't figure out.

This makes me mad! I went to buy some new T5 bulbs at PetSmart today and this is what I found. 5000K GE bulbs in both the Actinic and 18000K box. If you swapped these bulbs and returned them to PetsMart - YOU are an IDIOT!
